GREETINGS & GOOD HEALTH ON THIS GOOD MORNING.
MY OWN MIGRATION DOWN & BACK ALONG THE OPEN ROAD HAS BEEN BLESSED BY THE REMARKABLE GENEROSITY OF THE "POOR" MEXICAN FAMILIES WHO WELCOMED ME INTO THEIR HOMES, SAYING, MI CASA ES SU CASA"; THEN HELPED ME COME TO REALIZE WHAT THE JOY & "TRANQUILLO" OF INCLUSION MEANS & NECESSITATES EACH DAY IN A FAMILY, A COMMUNITY. THE SONG OF THE OPEN ROAD THAT REV. BODE DESCRIBES SO WELL, I CAME TO UNDERSTAND A LITTLE BIT BETTER BY LISTENING TO ENDLESS, RELENTLESS TRUCKS RAGING WITH COMMERCE THROUGH THE NIGHT, TO MANY BIRDS, TO MANY BREEZES BLOWING ACROSS OPEN WATERS ALONG MANY SHORELINES, THROUGH DESERT CACTI, DUSTY TRAILS, WORN ROCKS, TO CHILDREN LAUGHING IN RECOGNITION OF
HOW TO SAY ONE WORD, THEN ANOTHER, PROPERLY IN ENGLISH.
MY SPANISH HAS IMPROVED A LITTLE, TOO, AND MY ABILITY TO LAUGH AT MY SELF
AND TO SING.
BEFORE I HEADED DOWN TO MEXICO I WAS SURPRISED AT HOW MANY PEOPLE, ONE OF MY OWN SISTERS INCLUDED, WERE SCHOCKED AND FRIGHTENED THAT I WOULD MAKE SUCH A TRIP. THE POWER OF OUR POLITICS OF FEAR.
WILL D. CAMPBELL WAS TRULY A PIONEER AMONG MEN (WHITE MEN) WHO DARED TO CROSS THE LINE OF FEAR.
YOU ARE PROBABLY AWARE THAT WILL D. CAMPELL HAS DIED. AT A MOMENT IN HISTORY WHEN MANDELA IS PREPARING TO GO HOME,
CAMPBELL'S STORY, A STALWART WHITE FOOT-SOLDIER ON THE FREEDOM ROAD, SHOULD BE TOLD, HIS NAME SPOKEN, BECAUSE HE PRACTICED
A 'MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION."
A SELF-DESCRIBED GOOD OLD BOY, CAMPBELL BECAME THE ONLY WHITE MAN ADMITTED TO THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE IN 1957.
REV. JAMES LAWSON, THE CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER AND LONGTIME PASTOR PASTOR AT HOLMAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CHURCH IN LA CALLED CAMPBELL,
"ESSENTIAL TO THE STRUGGLE " FOR RACIAL EQUALITY.* CAMPBELL WAS FOND OF SAYING, "WE ARE ALL BASTARDS, BUT GOD LOVES US ANYWAY." OF RACISTS
CAMPBELL SAID, "THE MOST UNLOVELY AND THE MOST IN NEED."
BORN IN LIBERTY, MISS., IN 1924, CAMPBELL MADE A REMARKABLE TRANSITION FROM THE SON OF WHITE TRASH COTTON FARMERS TO AUTHOR OF MORE THAN A DOZEN BOOKS
THAT TOLD STORIES OF THE SOUL'S CORROSION WHEN MIRED IN HATRED, FEAR, IGNORANCE, SEGREGATION. CAMPBELL'S MANY ROLES IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
ALL HAD ONE PRINCIPAL IN COMMON, INCLUSION. IN 1998, CAMPBELL ATTENDED THE RETRIAL OF A MEMBER OF HIS CONGREGATION, A FORMER IMPERIAL WIZARD OF THE KLAN
WHO HAD MURDERED A WHITE GROCER FRIENDLY TO BLACKS. ASKED WHY, CAMPBELL RETORTED, BECAUSE I AM A CHRISTIAN, GOD DAMMIT!"
"IF YOU'RE GONNA LOVE ONE, YOU'VE GOT TO LOVE THEM ALL."
I have lit two candles this morning. I think a candle flame burns due to breaths of both
remembrance and hope, emanations culled from the four elements (dust to dust).
From a prison cell
A man saw freedom clearly
Time to go home.
Hope you are doing well,
Kenny Moser
