Important Day of Action this week, January 11th
On Thursday, January 11th, communities across Oregon and Northern California are heading to Salem to ask Governor Brown to stand up for the climate by stopping the Pacific Connector fracked gas Pipeline and Jordan Cove LNG Export Terminal.
This 229-mile pipeline and fracked gas export project would threaten 400 waterways, disturb tribal territories and cultural sites, trample the rights of landowners through use of eminent domain, put existing jobs in fishing, tourism, and other sectors at risk, drive up energy prices, and become the largest source of climate pollution in the state of Oregon.

On the same day, Oil Change International and the No LNG Exports Coalition are releasing a groundbreaking report that will show the full climate impacts of the proposed Jordan Cove project from fracking in Colorado, Wyoming, or Canada to burning the gas overseas. This will be the first lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions analysis of the entire project.
Gov. Brown and her State Agencies have the authority to deny state permits and stop this project once and for all. Brown recently returned from international climate talks where she said, “Despite the decision by the White House to retreat from leadership on climate, I see it as not only our moral obligation, but an economic imperative to lead in the fight against climate change.” We couldn’t agree more. Here in Oregon, we need Gov. Brown to walk her climate talk by stopping this project for good and helping our state transition to clean energy jobs for our rural communities.

On December 11, 2017, U.S. Congressman Bill Johnson (R-OH) introduced two bills related to LNG. The “Unlocking Our Domestic LNG Potential Act” (H.R. 4605) would allow domestic LNG suppliers “to export natural gas after completing the FERC review process – instead of waiting even longer for additional approval by the U.S. Department of Energy” (DOE). Tim Ryan (D-OH) is cosponsor of the bill. The “Ensuring Small Scale LNG Certainty and Access Act” (H.R. 4606) would codify the DOE’s proposed rule to encourage the exports of small volumes of natural gas, “as countries in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America look to the United States to meet their natural gas needs.”

The Bank ceased lending for coal-fired power stations in 2010 but has been under pressure from lobby groups also to halt the $1bn (£750m) a year it has been lending for oil and gas in developing countries….
…The Greenpeace International climate campaigner Gyorgy Dallos said: “The end is clearly coming for the oil and gas industry as the pace of change accelerates.”
Dallos said the Bank had sent a damning vote of no confidence in the future of the fossil fuel industry. “The world’s financial institutions now need to take note and decide whether their financing is going to be part of the problem or the solution,” he said….

…In a statement that delighted campaigners opposed to fossil fuels, the Bank used a conference in Paris to announce that it “will no longer finance upstream oil and gas” after 2019.
The Bank ceased lending for coal-fired power stations in 2010 but has been under pressure from lobby groups also to halt the $1bn (£750m) a year it has been lending for oil and gas in developing countries….
…The Greenpeace International climate campaigner Gyorgy Dallos said: “The end is clearly coming for the oil and gas industry as the pace of change accelerates.”
Dallos said the Bank had sent a damning vote of no confidence in the future of the fossil fuel industry. “The world’s financial institutions now need to take note and decide whether their financing is going to be part of the problem or the solution,” he said….
… the World Bank has raised the bar for climate leadership by recognizing the simple yet inconvenient truth that achieving the Paris agreement’s climate goals requires an end to the expansion of the fossil fuel industry. It is time for all of the institutions, countries, investors and individuals who are still in the Paris agreement to stop funding fossils – once and for all.”

…China is piloting the largest carbon-trading system in the world. It is creating more green energy jobs, faster than we are. And it is at the forefront of electric vehicles, as part of a larger push by the State Council to make China a global leader in AI by 2030. Among other areas in AI, China’s focus is on energy. Combined with One Belt, One Road (OBOR), China’s initiative to finance and build massive infrastructure projects in neighboring Eurasian nations, a focus on exporting clean energy know-how could be powerful.
Chinese solar players already account for around three-quarters of all solar photovoltaic wafers manufactured globally. And China’s other renewable energy leaders, such as Xinjiang Goldwind in wind turbines, have significant room to grow beyond China’s borders as the Paris Agreement allows for trillions of dollars of technology transfer to countries in need, from those with largesse and implementation expertise.
