Che Guevara and the Awakening of an Internationalist Movement" as a part of the Congo and the 50th Anniversary of the OAU/AU forum. A key aim of the event was to build support for the Congo among the Latino community and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
We extend a very special thank you to all our volunteers, artists, collaborators, and all who contributed their time and talent to make the evening a success. The event was well attended with standing room only. Presenters, Artists and Performers represented ten different countries from Africa and Latin America.

Clips from Jihan El-Tahri's documentary "Cuba: An African Odyssey" and "Freddy Ilunga: Che's Swahili Translator" were shown. Ofunshi Oba Koso, President of MN Yoruba Cuba Association and protégé of the late Freddy Ilunga (Che's personal interpreter in the Congo) and Kambale Musavuli, Spokesperson of Friends of the Congo were the featured presenters.
Puerto Rican native Roland Roebuck served as the Master of Ceremony for the night. Performing artists included Ancestral Master Drummer Baba Joseph Ngwa from Cameroon, Master Afro-Cuban percussionist Randell Villalonga from Cuba, and percussionist Juan Rivera of Honduras and El Salvador. The dancers included Bintou Kouyate, daughter of the late renowned Senegalese musician Diali Djimo Kouyate and Gisele Eboma from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Visual artist Byron Morales Lorca "Mota" of Chile did a live painting inspired by the evening's music, dance and discussion. Click here to view photos from the event!

Due to demands to see the entire film of Cuba: An African Odyssey, Friends of the Congo in collaboration with Cafe Arte will be screening the film on Friday, May 31st at 7:00 p.m. at Cafe Arte, 1826 Columbia Road, NW 2nd Floor, El Rincon Espanol, Washington, DC 20009.
Funds raised from the event went to benefit the Congo Connect Youth Initiative. Should you wish to support the youth initiative, click here to make your contribution.
